MJ Kinman

  • Textile Artist
  • Quilt Gemologist

I like to tell people I make the biggest diamonds in the world. But instead of using the hardest material on earth, I use the softest -- fabric. I've been making giant gem quilts for over 30 years and love to share my techniques with students around the world. You may have seen my work in publications like Quiltfolk and Quilting Arts Magazine or on shows like Quilting Arts TV or the Quilting Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims.

If you'd like to learn more, sign up for a class with me and then check out my book Gemstone Quilts (published by C&T Publishing). Shine on!

Students Love Learning From MJ

MJ has a gift for teaching and a wonderful way of making you feel included in an online class as if you were there in person which, in this age of online learning, is a vital part of feeling that you are not missing out on an in-person experience. The personal attention MJ generously provides is second to none. Wherever you are on your sewing journey, MJ welcomes you and delights with her extensive knowledge, not just of practical teaching, but of all things gem related.

While only the rich and famous can own these actual gemstones, all of us quilters can own and personalize gemstone blocks. I signed up for Tiny Treasures unsure about whether I would like the single foundation piecing technique. MJ provided us with clear and accurate patterns and offered training videos with lots of helpful hints to make beautiful fabric gemstones.

I have taken several of MJ’s gemstones patterns and converted them into gemstone bowls. These gemstone series have been wonderful additions to my quilting knowledge and techniques. Many thanks to MJ.

As a fan of everything that sparkles, what a joy to have found the Tiny Treasures Club. As a novice with a sewing machine, I have found MJ’s designs, instruction, and support to be the perfect combination to help me create another sparkling beauty month after month. MJ is passionate about what she creates and goes beyond to help you see how you can express your own personality within her designs. It has been a great experience for me.
